Starting an HVAC Business
Here are a few things every new HVAC businessperson should know.
Starting an HVAC business is exciting. It can also be daunting. You can make it easier by establishing a business model that will carry you far past the first five years.
Write a mission statement
It's critical to develop a mission statement you can adhere to from the very beginning. As you company grows, you may need to adjust your business statement, but make sure it's something you will stick to.
The Basics
Decide what tasks and which employees you need to hire. You can only keep up the company as a one-man band for so long before needing to hire licensed crew, office staff and bookkeeping. Also, make sure you budget for appropriate equipment and backup gear. Always prepare for the worst to make your business withstand the heat.
Be Disciplined
The hardest thing you'll ever do is be your own boss. For disorganized owners, it can prove disastrous. Managing time and knowing your limits is very important, and vital to business growth.
Invest in Training
Each employee benefits from HVAC and business training. Providing it will help to grow your company's reputation and provide a recruitment incentive. Enroll them in both specialized courses, and courses everyone can take.
When your company starts to grow, you'll face new challenges, such as process changes and micro-management versus macro-management. In the above video, Gary Oetker, the business coach for HVAC Learning Solutions, discusses some of these challenges.
