Helping Pave the Way for Success
Sometimes, just because you work in an industry, that doesn’t guarantee you have all the answers. Scott Asbury, owner of Dixon & Kee HVAC experienced that after his son Ethan expressed an interest to follow in his dad’s footsteps after high school. The question that caught Scott off guard last fall was “What’s the best way to help launch Ethan’s career?”
Every summer during high school Ethan worked with his dad. While gaining valuable hands-on experience, Ethan was missing key components such as formal HVAC instruction and basic principles of electricity, heating, and cooling. Plus, he hadn’t achieved any HVAC certifications.
After graduating high school, Ethan’s family considered a technical school that allows their students to work full time while learning on the job — the program required two hours of class time, twice per week, for eighteen months. This was a possibility as the program would allow Ethan to earn money and learn on the job.
Jon Reed, Lennox Territory Manager for Scott’s area, suggested that Ethan might consider the Lennox Learning Solutions (LLS) BuildATech® program instead. The four-week program consists of one week of webinars and homework, followed by three weeks of classroom instruction and live lab practice.
When Ethan’s family got together to decide, Scott said he felt it was better to, “…go through the manufacturer (Lennox) and learn eight hours per day, rather than two hours, twice a week.” Plus, Ethan would be learning from instructors of a highly respected brand in the HVAC industry.
Ethan decided to attend BuildATech® after he finished high school. He’s now working as a lead installer for Dixon & Kee. Scott believes, “It gave him a good start in his career, for sure.” When asked if he thinks Ethan will succeed him in the business someday, Scott said, “I’m sure he will.”
